MAINE ENGINE-LINER CRACK
During a voyage from Korea to South Africa, one of the main engine unit started making knocking noise and found heavy leakage of jacket water from the tell tale hole of the liner. Unit cut off and engine stopped. Opened up the unit and found liner and piston skirt cracked. Since the next port was two days ahead and the spare liner was kept in a position which will take a day to lower down, decided to block the unit.
Cooling water to that unit was shut off exhaust ports sealed, stuffing box space sealed, starting air and distributor blanked and cylinder head fitted without the piston in place. That was a six cylinder sulzer RNDM engine, vessel sailed with five pistons and berthed safely without any difficulty. In port replaced the liner and piston with spare new one.
