The following Incident is about a vessel where routine cleaning of sea suction filters was being done. 2E started opening the filter covers, assuming filters valves are holding. Once the filter element was out of the casing, found the filter’s element damaged and required time for repair.

Also noticed that the valves were not holding and plenty water was coming to engine room. It was decided to take a shut down after starting the emergency generator which was tested and recorded as satisfactory. After half of running the Emergency generator engine stopped due to high temperature. The balance job, the trouble shooting and starting back the E. Generator took more than 3 hours.

The Problem with the generator was the 3 way temp. Control valve stuck in close position which required only cleaning. These breakdown could have been avoided if the E. Generator was tested on load for sometime, instead of just starting the engine.
