BULK CARRIER - CRANE BREAK DOWN
The Ship was a bulk carrier, and Crane #5 main motor burnt. After completion of Cargo, the crane was slewed, with the help of other crane to the parking position.
Now to lower the jib to the rest pads, the huffing drum brake has to be released hydraulically. All hydraulic arrangements were made (the hand pump to be connected to the hydraulic circuit) and before actually using it, it was planned to try out the hydraulic arrangement.
During the trial, the moment the brake was released, the jib fell down, damaging the crane and platform. There was no causality.
Lessons learnt :
Before releasing the brakes, the weight of the jib should have been taken by other crane.
