Two Auxiliary engines were running out at sea. One fine morning, due to low frequency, both engines tripped off and there was black out. Main Engine also stopped. The third auxiliary engine was started and taken on load. After a few minutes, it also tripped on low frequency. The auxiliary engines were using blended oil.

Investigation started, the filters were opened up and found only vapour coming and no oil. The vapours were very hot. Checked the temperature of the oil, found quite high beyond the normal values. The temperature was brought down, found the control valve not functioning automatically, same temporarily changed over to manual. The entire system was purged off vapour, and the engine restarted, found satisfactory.

There was no indication of high temperature, though local thermometer indicated a high temperature. Though the automation is given for convenience, it should be noted that physical watch keeping also is required to avoid such exigencies.
