22nd Nov. 04
On board a container vessel at Colombo while the containers were being loaded one of the containers which was stuffed with organic dye-intermediate compound stored in jerry-cans caught fire.
The toxic fumes produced were pumped into the accommodation spaces by the accommodation blower. The Fire alarm was raised and ship staff were ordered to leave the ship by the master.
The Fire was fought by the port fire brigade, the container removed and also containers carrying the same type of cargo were also removed prior sailing out.
Probable Cause:- Can containing the chemical was leaking and since it was raining and the container was not watertight, water seeped inside and chemical reaction was setoff resulting in fire.
