The vessel was in anchorage. Fifth Engineer wanted to transfer bilge water from the Engine room bilges to the bilge holding tank.

After setting the lines when he switched on the pump, the pump didn't rotate. For the sake of checking the belt tension, he kept his hand on the belt. But then the pump started rotating, entrapping his fingers in the pulley groove. His fingers were parted from his hand.

The lessons learnt from the incident are:

1. The pump belt should not be slack.
2. Before doing anything on machinery, the machine should be put off.
