CAMSHAFT COUPLING FAILURE
5th July 04
During Sailing, the main engine failed without any alarm. On inspection, it was found that camshaft coupling bolts had sheared off.
Since there were no spare coupling bolts, other bolts could not take that load and failed again. Finally we could manage to reach port only after arranging to get the spare bolts on board and fit them in place.
This coupling belt failure on analysis was found attributable to failure of bracing stays, which induced lot of vibrations on the whole engine.
