The ship was a UMS class vessel with a B&W main engine. There was an alarm and the turbo charger was found to be surging during sailing.

On entering the E/R, a heavy metallic hammering noise was noticed from the main engine. M.E. was stopped immediately and the alarm for deviation of each temp in #3 was acknowledged.

Found in #3 unit every valve cracked and a broken piece found. The broken piece had fallen in to the liner space causing the hammering. The compression pressure had dropped and the fuel could not combust fully. The T/C surged and each temp deviation alarm became actuated.

Fortunately the M.E. was stopped in time and saved from severe damage. The marks on the liner, piston and the cylinder head were dressed up smoothly. Small broken pieces stuck in the trunking grids were cleared.
