ACCIDENT WHEN CHANGING FAN BELT
When I was working as 2nd Engineer on the ship M.T. Colorato, I told the Electrical Officer to change the compressor fan belt.
I told him to wait there and do the job after my coming back. When I arrived back to the A/c room I found out that the Electrical office's right thumb had severed from his hand and he had been taken to the ship's hospital. The severed portion ha been kept in the fridge room.
Upon enquiry we found out that the Electrical Officer ad stopped the starboard A/c compressor with the pulley of motor and fan still rotating due to air supply from port compressor.
Under rotation E/O tried to remove the belt with a screwdriver. The screwdriver slipped and the thumb got caught between the pulley and belt.
