BROKEN GLASSES

The following accident happened when I was a Second Engineer. The vessel was alongside a quay at Portland, Maine (USA). The Chief Engineer asked me to take out the M/E fuel pumps for survey.

I was using a long spanner for unscrewing the foundation bolts of pumps when dismantling them. Third Engineer who was wearing spectacles was standing behind me. I was at my job without having noticed him, when all of sudden I heard a noise.

When I turned around I saw third Engineer bleeding through his eyes. I realized the spanner had hit his spectacles, and a piece of glass had hurt his eye.Fortunately we were in port and an ambulance was called immediately. He was taken to a hospital where microsurgery was done on his eye and the broken piece removed.

Shatter proof glasses are recommended for shipboard use to avoid such injuries.
