This happened on a Suezmax crude oil tanker. After taking due precautions the fitter commenced welding a doubler on a soot blower steam inlet line. The fitter did the job as instructed.

Then along with the fourth engineer he went to try out the steam line. At this time the fitter was standing near the steam drain line scupper. The drain v/v was fully opened by the fourth engineer. On opening the v/v the hot water in the steam line spurted out of the drain and burned the fitter.

Immediately he was sent to the hospital. It took one and a half month for the fitter to completely recover the burns.
