INTERACTION ON PERSONAL SAFETY


During the year of 2002;on board a reefer ship our Reefer-Engineer was on rounds to check in side no 2 Mast house. He was assisted by one AB as he required to go in to the cargo hold to take temperatures.

The assisting AB was preparing the cargo light for additional illumination in the Battery space and the Reefer engineer's left palm was severely injured as the weather tight door of the mast house came off the hinges and fell on him. No specific reasons were found for this accidents but after inspecting the hinge pins for all watertight doors it was concluded that some of these may loose pin from severe vibrations the vessel appeared subject to.
Hence it was decided by the safety committee members on board that on additional routine/ periodical check must be conducted to avoid further accidents.
