MOORING WINCH FAILURE
2nd Feb. 04
Bridge informed Engine Room while berthing that the aft mooring winches were not working.
We started investigating but found nothing wrong in the motor or operating stand controls. Finally we found that there was no oil discharge from the pump. Opened same and found all pistons broken (it was an axial piston pump which is submersed in the hydraulic oil tank).
We removed one pump from the forward windlass and fitted it aft.
In the investigation later we found the hydraulic oil contaminated by seawater from the oil cooler which had been kept on continuously and not checked nor maintained. This led to the pump failure.
