I was a trainee engineer on the ship. The ship was maneuvered for arrival at Bahrain. The stand-by generator was idling on diesel oil. All of a sudden there was a crankcase explosion, the area surrounding the engine was filled with smoke, the 3/E who was nearby managed to stop the engine.
We waited for the engine to cool down for sometime, by the time the ship was alongside., All the crankcase doors was opened for inspection, all bearings were felt, and it was found that #4 unit bearing was very hot.
So the cylinder head was removed, bearing and piston were removed. It was found that the white metal from the bearing was chipped and it completely choked the L/ O hole in the crankshaft and connecting rod. Also the bedplate of the engine was choked.
