I served as a Second engineer in the early eighties.

When we were manoeuvering while transiting the Suez canal, the vessel was grounded.

The stern had touched the bottom and on inspection we found the rudder forced up where it contacted the hull and became bent at its upper end.

Then the vessel was towed to the nearest dry dock.

A whole new rudder along with the stock had to be fabricated and fitted back.
