On a Bulk carrier we were approaching Vancouver BC in Canada.

There was a 3-hour pilotage through a narrow channel. The same day the Chief Engineer told the 3rd engineer to transfer the remaining fuel oil of one particular tank which was almost empty into the settling tank. The reason was to make enough space for the planned bunkering.

When the ship was under pilotage, suddenly we got a viscosity abnormal alarm. First we checked C/O V/V's. All were ok. Then we checked F. O Settling Tk drain there was only water coming. So immediately we changed over M.E. to D.O and proceeded.

Even though C/O to D/O at that temp was not advisable but we had to do it because of F.O ser and set tks. Transferred fresh oil from other tank. Situation brought back to normal.

Lessons To Be learnt:

1. Never attempt to transfer during manoeuvering oil which has been left a long while.
2. Plan everything in advance and finish all transfers out at sea (not just before approaching port
