TC LUB OIL FAILURE

ABB Turbocharger for RTA Engine has a pickup for turbo charger RPM, fitted with a lubricant oil pump.
The flow of lube oil can be checked through the sight glass, there is also an arrangement for a no-lube-oil-flow alarm. As the vessel came out of port and full ahead was given, the turbocharger surged. The engine was slowed down immediately and stopped. The lube oil no-flow alarm sounded.
The senior engineers by the TC at the time observed it still rotating; but the forward end was not getting oil.
The end cover was opened up and on inspection we found the frayed magnetic pickup & bearing pieces. The inspection of lube oil showed it had sucked the metal particles of the magnetic pickup, stopping the flow of oil and resulting in the instant seizure of the lube oil pump.
The magnetic pickup was not visible from the sight glass, so later a new design of magnetic pickup rather than the self locking type was installed.
