SCAVENGE FIRE DURING SEA TRIAL
The engine was 8600 kW MAN B & W S 50 MC.Sea trials were being carried out, and most of them went on satisfactorily. While doing the crash stop trial, no. 4 unit found with high exhaust temperature. It was noticed the scavenge fire had occurred in unit 4. Engine was slowed down and stopped.
On tracing the causes for the fault, it was found that the fuel injector was at fault as instead of spraying the fuel onto the centre of the cylinder, oil was sprayed on to the sides of the liner. This caused accumulation of oil in the under piston and scavenge spaces, which had given rise to the fire.
