This incident happened in a car carrier, fitted with B&W, SMC engine with NOX controls and with electronic governor. Ship was under guarantee period and was less than one year old. Ship had CPP.

Ship was approaching port Portbuy in UK, and pilot was on board. Vessel was in lock gate. All off sudden M/E tripped on actuation over speed trip. All fuel racks gone to max position. Controls changed over to local and engines started and reached berth safely.

Service engineer came on board, checked all control units, found encoder was malfunctioning. Same replaced with new one and engine tried out. Vessel sailed from the port, after this governor did not give any problem.
