Personal safety is the most important thing on board a vessel. To avoid accidents Necessary Precautions must be taken before starting any maintenance work.

Following incident occurred on board a product tanker.

Just before starting the cargo pump, it was reported that no. 1 cop had failed to start. The steam inlet valve got stuck and same needed to be opened up. The Engine fitter was called for the job and necessary preparations.

In particular shutting off the main valve and draining the line before the work is started. The fitter was especially instructed to wait till the line gets completely drained of water, and also wait for second engineer to check and reconfirm the same.

In the meanwhile second engineer was away from engine room for breakfast. The Fitter, who came down before the second engineer did, started slackening the flange bolts. As he saw that no more water was coming from the drain, he opened the flange bolts completely. When he was opening the last bolt, the whole flange with a small amount of water and steam came on his chest and shoulders leading to serious burns. He was given first aid and later shifted to hospital for treatment lasting a month.
