DAMAGE DUE TO WINDLASS BRAKE NOT HOLIDNG
Proceeding to berth in buoyed channel, Master asked to prepare stbd anchor, for emergency. Removed all lashings and found brake was not holding fully and unable to take out from the gear. Tightened brake with spanner, lowered by motor and at that instant, removed the gear with the help of a hammer.
Brake did not hold, anchor went off damaging chain locker, windlass, ship side and also one of the channel buoys.
Lesson learnt :
These type of machinery and other emergency requirements, should be checked up and maintained periodically to avoid such damages.
