DAMAGES AT PORT BLAIR DUE TO TSUNAMI
This incident took place on 26.12.2004 at Port Blair. The ship was alongside the jetty. Around 0630hrs, vessel started rolling and pitching violently. It was found from the jetty that this was due to the earthquake. Water level started increasing and the mooring ropes became slack. Master had gone ashore. The main engines were started and all the ropes were cut and the ship proceeded to sea and the ship was just floating and roaming around the same area for 24 hrs. After 24 hrs and when the situation became normal, the ship came towards the jetty, but found to the surprise that all jettys were in a damaged condition. With a great difficulty, the ship was berthed.
