FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Premium FAQ
B.Tech Marine Engineering is a specialized branch of engineering that deals with the design, operation, maintenance, and management of ship machinery and marine propulsion systems. It focuses on engines, boilers, electrical systems, and automation used in merchant navy vessels and offshore ships.
A Marine Engineer is responsible for operating and maintaining the ship’s main engine, auxiliary engines, fuel systems, electrical systems, refrigeration, and safety equipment. They ensure smooth vessel operations and safety at sea under Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) regulations.
Students must complete 12th with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM), qualify Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMU CET), and join a DG Shipping approved B.Tech Marine Engineering program. After graduation, onboard training and competency exams lead to certification as a Marine Engineer.
Candidates must have completed 12th with PCM and typically require a minimum of 60% aggregate in PCM and 50% in English. Eligibility must comply with Indian Maritime University (IMU) and DG Shipping norms.
JEE is not mandatory for Marine Engineering. Admission is primarily based on IMU-CET for admission into IMU-affiliated colleges.
Yes, diploma holders in Mechanical or Marine Engineering may apply through lateral entry directly into the second year of B.Tech Marine Engineering, subject to Indian Maritime University and DG Shipping eligibility criteria.
Generally, candidates should be between 17–25 years (age relaxation as per norms). Medical fitness as per DG Shipping standards, including eyesight and overall health, is mandatory.
Good eyesight is required, and candidates must not be colour blind. Spectacles are allowed within prescribed limits, but candidates must meet DG Shipping medical standards.
Students must undergo a DG Shipping–approved medical examination conducted by an authorized doctor. The medical test includes vision standards (including color vision), hearing ability, physical fitness, and overall health assessment as per Merchant Navy guidelines.
Swimming is not compulsory for admission to the Marine Engineering program. However, it is considered a valuable survival skill for seafarers and is beneficial during onboard training and safety drills.
Yes, women can pursue B.Tech Marine Engineering and join the Merchant Navy. The shipping industry follows strict international maritime safety protocols, making it a professional and secure career option for female candidates.
To promote greater participation of women in the Merchant Navy and support aspiring women seafarers, HIMT College offers a ₹1,00,000 course fee discount is offered for girl students enrolling in the B.Tech Marine Engineering program. This initiative encourages gender diversity and creates more opportunities for women in the maritime industry.
Marine Engineering focuses on ship machinery and technical operations, while Nautical Science deals with navigation, ship handling, and cargo management. Marine Engineers work in the engine department; Captains and Deck Officers belong to the deck department.
A Marine Engineer manages technical machinery onboard, whereas a Ship Captain (Master Mariner) is responsible for navigation, crew management, and overall command of the vessel.
B.Tech Marine Engineering is a 4-year undergraduate degree program followed by onboard sea training and competency examinations to progress in rank.
The five major systems include propulsion system, fuel and lubrication system, cooling system, electrical power generation system, and boiler/steam system essential for ship operations.
Marine Engineering is a high-paying, globally respected, and adventurous career in the Merchant Navy. It offers international exposure, tax benefits, career growth, and long-term job security.
Yes, skilled Marine Engineers are in high demand due to global shipping trade expansion. With increasing maritime logistics and offshore industries, job security and career stability remain strong.
Marine Engineering has a strong future with advancements in green shipping, automation, LNG vessels, and smart ships. AI will assist operations, but skilled engineers are essential for supervision, maintenance, and safety, making the career future-proof.
Graduates join as Junior Engineer/Trainee Marine Engineer, progress to 4th Engineer, 3rd Engineer, 2nd Engineer, and ultimately Chief Engineer after clearing competency exams and gaining sea time.
A 4th Engineer is an entry-level certified officer in the engine department responsible for maintaining auxiliary engines, compressors, pumps, and machinery under supervision.
After completing required sea service and passing Class IV, Class II, and Class I competency exams conducted under DG Shipping guidelines, a Marine Engineer can become a Chief Engineer.
The starting salary of a Trainee Marine Engineer ranges approximately from USD 300 to USD 900 per month onboard, depending on the shipping company. Salaries increase significantly with rank and experience.
A Chief Engineer on international vessels can earn more than USD 5500 per month, depending on vessel type and company.
Marine Engineers receive tax-free income (as per NRI rules), free accommodation and food onboard, medical insurance, travel benefits, and paid leave after contract completion.
Marine Engineers work on contract basis, typically 4–6 months onboard followed by 2–3 months leave. This rotational schedule allows extended family time.
English is the international language of the global shipping industry, and effective communication is essential for onboard safety, teamwork, and professional growth in the Merchant Navy. As per the eligibility criteria for the B.Tech Marine Engineering program, candidates must secure a minimum of 50% marks in English in their 10th or 12th standard to qualify for admission.
Marine Engineering is technically intensive and combines Mechanical, Electrical, and Automation engineering with practical shipboard training. It is specialized but rewarding for technically inclined students.
Both fields have strong career prospects. Marine Engineering offers global travel, high sea-based salaries, and hands-on technical exposure, while Computer Science offers shore-based IT careers.
Yes, many reputed Marine Engineering colleges offer campus placement opportunities through leading national and international shipping companies. Placement support typically includes interview training, company sponsorship guidance, and onboard training assistance. In addition, HIMT provides 100% placement support for eligible candidates, helping students secure career opportunities in the Merchant Navy after successful completion of the B.Tech Marine Engineering program.
