HIMT Plants 2,500 Saplings for a Greener Maritime Future

Growing a Greener Future: 2,500 Saplings Plantation in Tuticorin.

Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training – HIMT is proud to have undertaken a 2,500-sapling plantation drive in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, in collaboration with the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) Chennai & Tuticorin, under the aegis of the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA), India.

The plantation drive was graced by Honourable, Capt. Anish Joseph, Principal Officer-cum-Jt.DG (Tech) (I/c), MMD Chennai, as the Chief Guest, who led the initiative in Tuticorin. The occasion was also graced by Shri. S. Satyanarayana Murty, Surveyor In- Charge & E & SS-cum-DDG (Tech), MMD Tuticorin, as the Guest of Honour, whose presence further reinforced the maritime administration’s commitment towards environmental responsibility and sustainability.

With 2,500 saplings planted, the initiative marks a meaningful step towards increasing green cover and creating a lasting positive environmental impact for generations to come.

HIMT Group is privileged to support the environmental initiatives of the Directorate General of Maritime Administration and the Mercantile Marine Department and to contribute towards a greener and more sustainable future.

The drive was undertaken as part of “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, the nationwide campaign launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri. Narendra Modi, encouraging citizens to plant a tree in honour of their mother and contribute towards environmental conservation and a greener India.

On 5 June 2026, HIMT is pleased to be recognised for its contribution of 200 saplings towards environmental sustainability through the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative. This recognition reflects our continued commitment to supporting meaningful environmental efforts, promoting greener communities, and contributing to a more sustainable future. Through responsible CSR initiatives, we remain committed to creating a positive and lasting impact on society and the environment.

MERCHANT NAVY CAREER AWARENESS PROGRAM AT HIMT COLLEGE

Under the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA), India’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, India is aiming to increase the number of Indian seafarers, particularly women, by enhancing maritime training, improving on-board opportunities, and promoting careers at sea.

As a step towards this national mission, HIMT conducted a Merchant Navy Career Awareness Program on 11th September 2025 for the enthusiastic Class 10 students of Shree Niketan Patasala, Vengambakkam, Chennai.

The students were given a guided tour of our state-of-the-art training facilities, briefed on the roles of the International Maritime Organization IMO and DGMA, and engaged in an interactive session with our cadets to learn about building a rewarding career at sea.

Capt. Anand Subramanian, Principal of HIMT, inducted the students into Merchant Navy awareness, inspiring them to dream big and align themselves with India’s growing maritime opportunities.

At HIMT, we are proud to contribute to DGMA’s (DG Shipping) vision of empowering the next generation of seafarers and strengthening India’s position in the global maritime sector.
